Depth
Because where you drop matters as much as what you drop.
Whether you're fishing the shallows for whiting or going deep for snapper, depth changes everything—species, bait, rig, and even scent trail.
Shallow water (0–5m):
- Good for garfish, tommies, squid, flathead
- Light gear, burley trails, and scent matter more
- Toss a sponge soaked in Tassie Salmon Fish Oil into a berley pot—it draws fish into your zone fast
Mid-depth (5–15m):
- Target trevally, King George whiting, blueys
- Stronger current = wider scent spread
- Use weighted rigs and drop the sponge deeper with berley cages
Deeper drops (15m+):
- Think snapper, gummy shark
- Scent takes longer to travel—boost your bait or sponge with a second splash of oil
- Use heavier weights to keep your pot or line steady
In SA waters, depth often decides whether you’re feeding the fish or catching them. Knowing when to go deeper—and how to prep your bait—makes all the difference.
